Locations

There are so many decisions to make when it comes to your senior portrait session and the number one question always seems to be how to choose the perfect location. Finding the perfect location is of course subjective and really is all about what’s perfect for you.  – here are some tips for choosing the perfect location for your senior portraits.

Who are you and what do you want your senior portraits to say about you? Are you artsy? A fashionista? A country girl/guy? A free spirit? A hipster? An outdoorsy casual girl/guy? A sleek city girl/guy? A sports fanatic? A water lover?

Find a location that has a variety of features and spots for portraits. We want to be able to get a variety of photos from your location so choosing a location that has many different features is key.

Gorgeous light always wins over a pretty background. Keeping this is mind the time of day will always dictate where we go and how we choose our locations. When looking for locations we need to have shade available to us. Taking images out in the glaring sunlight will yield you less than flattering results…shade is often our best friend especially during the harshest afternoon light.

What will you be wearing for your portraits?  I know this one sounds a little silly and you’re thinking why should you have to worry about what to wear while you’re thinking about location. Quite honestly your clothing choices can help to make or break a location being perfect. Your wardrobe choice needs to match the feel of the location you choose and also have color harmony.

Consider the crowds and timing when thinking of locations. Easiest put busy locations look busy! That’s great if the look you’re going for in your portraits is busy, hustle bustle, city life.

What to Wear

Choose solid, natural colors as they photograph well and blend to most surroundings. Neon’s will do the opposite.

Try on your outfits one by one in their entirety. Be sure underwear, bra straps and tags are hidden and that socks, shoes, jewelry or other accessories complement the look. Boxers can bunch up, bra color can show through light color shirts and the wrong length or color socks can look rather odd with certain shoes.

Stand in front of a full length mirror and ask a family member or friend for input or suggestions. Be aware that one or two pieces of jewelry go a long way and too many accessories can take away from the photos.

If you usually wear glasses and your lenses are transition lenses, safely remove them before the shoot. This will prevent glare. If you cannot or do not wish to remove transition lenses, I may ask you to hold your glasses until seconds before each photo I take so your eyes will be visible and not shaded. Feel free to bring glass cleaner wipes along.

If you want to be photographed in a sports uniform, bring the full uniform including socks, shoes, hat or helmet and all the equipment to accompany it so the end result will look thorough and genuine.

If you will be photographed with a pet consider whether you need to bring any accessories for him or her, as well as a collar and leash.  It’s also a great idea to have someone assigned to handle the pet during the session.
